Sonja was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma of the nasal orbit when she was not only three years old, in 1997.  She was treated with multimodal therapy (surgical, chemo and radiotherapy) in Belgrade. After two years, there was a relapse, that is recurrence of the disease. Treatment was repeated with much more aggressive doses of cytostatics.

Then for the next 10 years she was waiting for the results of MRI or CT, each time with the fear that the disease would recur. In the meantime, Sonja finished primary and secondary school with great success, and then the Faculty of Graphic Design with grade 10. While she was preparing for the graduation exam in 2017, she noticed persistent nosebleeds. She was soon diagnosed with olfactory neuroblastoma in the left nasal cavity, as a result of radiation from 17 years ago. And she struggled with this, the tumor was removed and she was able to defend her graduate thesis. She graduated with the highest grade 10.

Sonja went to England to continue her studies and there, two years later, in 2020, nosebleeds appeared again. This time the diagnosis was sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma. She was treated only surgically, considering the already received maximum doses of cytostatics and radiation, which weakened her heart. However, the tumor continued to grow. Due to a weak heart, a new operation was not possible and Sonja returned home. Fortunately, our doctors in Serbia had much more will, knowledge and readiness to fight for her life. She was first saved by doctors on an X-knife at the KCS Neurosurgery, thanks to the willingness of our healthcare system to follow the latest technologies.

Sonja got a special vaccine that kills tumor cells at a clinic abroad. It is the systemic therapy that she needed. In March of this year, Sonja got that vaccine, and due to the high costs, the family exhausted all resources.

She needs a revaccination in June, for which she needs all of us to help her with our donations. Her family hopes that Sonja will be able to recover, because after 25 years of fighting, she deserves it.

She needs funds for treatment abroad, specialist examinations, laboratory analyzes, as well as for travelling and accommodation costs.
